Tuesday, August 26, 2008

AED 20 million allocated for month-long celebration as Festival gathers support from prominent list of Official, Main and Sub Sponsors. The Higher Committee of the Sharjah Ramadan Festival today (Tuesday, August 26, 2008) formally announced the budget and the sponsors of the 2008 edition of the Festival. The 2008 Sharjah Ramadan Festival’s AED 20 million budget and sponsors were revealed during a press conference held at the Millennium Hotel, Corniche Road, Sharjah.

The conference was held under the patronage of H.E. Sheikh Sultan Bin Ahmed Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairman of Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority (SCTDA) and also Chairman of the Higher Committee of the Sharjah Ramadan Festival. The media event was attended by Mr. Ahmad Mohammad Al Midfa, Chairman, Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) and Vice President of the Higher Committee; Mr. Hussein Mohammad Al Mahmoudi, SCCI Director General and Member of the Higher Committee; and Mr. Mohammed Ahmad Amin, SCCI Assistant Director General of Economic and International Affairs and General Coordinator for the Festival, who all served as conference speakers.

H.E. Sheikh Sultan said, “The Sharjah Ramadan Festival has been developed to accommodate all business categories. Organisers fully understand the importance of the private sector in accelerating economic development and have thus oriented this year’s festival to harmonize the efforts of government agencies, specialized bodies and associations, and public events with private sector interests in order to increase investments and attract the largest number of visitors and shoppers possible.”

“Although the Sharjah Ramadan Festival has already made its mark as a major social, cultural, and business event in the UAE, we want to further enhance this and other activities that highlight Sharjah’s dynamism. We aim to double the number of visitors and shoppers from within and outside the emirate in 2008, which is highly achievable given the broader confirmed participation of retail and related establishments this year. We will also use the Ramadan celebrations to drum up interest in our other seasonal activities as well,” said Hussein Al Mahmoudi.

The highly-anticipated annual event, which will coincide with the holy month of Ramadan and will run for 37 days, will feature emirate-wide participation in various social, cultural, religious, sports, environmental and heritage activities. SCCI will be closely coordinating with local government departments to successfully organise this year’s edition, which will be supported by sponsors categorized as Official, Main and Sub Sponsors.

The Official Sponsors of the 2008 Sharjah Ramadan Festival include Sharjah Municipality, Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority, Sharjah Economic Development Department, Sharjah Police, Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority, Al Qasba Channel, Sharjah Expo Center, Sharjah TV and Sharjah Museums Department. The Main Sponsors, meanwhile, feature ADNOC Distribution, Etisalat, Arabian Automobiles, Hydra Properties, Sharjah Investment Center, and Al Zajel Exhibition Organisers. Finally, the Sub Sponsors comprise Al Khaleej Newspaper, Sharjah City Center, Air Arabia, Paris Gallery, Empost, Tiffany and Sharjah Islamic Bank.

The Sharjah Ramadan Festival is considered a major image-enhancing and marketing event for the Emirate of Sharjah. SCCI will assist in organizing promotional and entertainment activities aimed at boosting local investments and the overall domestic economy, in addition to supporting private businesses and bringing together various sectors of society. Several shops, markets and shopping centers have already confirmed their participation in the September 2008 event.

Numerous exciting and fun-filled activities have been lined up for this yearCs commemoration of the Sharjah Ramadan Festival, catering to a diverse range of interest groups. As always, shopping events will take centerstage, while there will also be several leisure and entertainment activities such as sportsfests, exhibitions, social gatherings, and shows for children. Furthermore, several raffle draws that will give away exciting prizes will serve as another major highlight of the month-long festivities.

The SCCI previously assisted in the promotion and organization of the Sharjah Spring Festival which ran from January 15 to 25, 2008, and is currently supporting the Sharjah Summer Festival, which began on June 01, 2008 and ends August 31, 2008. Both events are also major promotional and marketing vehicles for Sharjah, aside from their various unique recreational and social activities.

“Sharjah is emerging as a preferred national destination for diverse and unique special events and is playing a larger role in the UAE’s growth. The SCCI will continue promoting and supporting events such as the Ramadan Festival which showcase our rich heritage while contributing to the development of our domestic and national economy,” concluded Al Mahmoudi.

Accomplished movie actors Mohanlal and Mukesh play lead roles in the unique theatre presentation. Good Times Tourism, the leading destination management services provider in the UAE, today announced that it will stage the critically acclaimed Malayalam play, Chayamukhi (literally translating into Mirroring the Mind) in the UAE. The unique theatre presentation based on the legendary Indian epic Mahabharat will be staged in three venues in the UAE: Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Ras Al Khaimah. The UAE marks the first international destination for Chayamukhi, which has been commended with rave reviews during its performances in India.

Chayamukhi is scheduled to be staged in Dubai on October 30, 2008, in Abu Dhabi on October 31 and in Ras Al Khaimah on November 2, 2008. It will also be staged in other GCC countries in November.

Commenting on the staging of Chayamukhi in the UAE, Mr. Baby John, Managing Director, Good Times Tourism, said: “We are pleased and honoured to bring Chayamukhi to the UAE. The play will be a visual treat for all theatre enthusiasts here. With illustrious actors such as Mohanlal and Mukesh on stage, Chayamukhi will certainly turn out to be an unforgettable experience for all of us.” Chayamukhi is an interesting amalgam of the elements of classical and ethnic theatres. Mohanlal and Mukesh play the roles of Bhima and Keechika respectively. The play also features a young and talented set of actors.

The story of Chayamukhi revolves around a mirror. Once a person sets his/her eyes on the mirror, it surprisingly exhibits the image of his/her beloved one. The mirror brings much stress and troubles in to the lives of the play’s main characters.

The play won the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy Award for the Best Script in 2003. A presentation of Kalidasa Visual Magic, Chayamukhi is directed by Prashanth Narayanan. The director has penned Chayamukhi on the lines of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

While noted Malayalam poet ONV has written the lyrics, the illustrious Namboothiri is the costume designer and Mohan Sitara the music director of Chayamukhi. The event is being staged in the GCC countries under the leadership of noted producer and actor Dinesh Panicker.

The details regarding ticket sales and related information will be announced closer to the event.

Popular Youth Channel to Stick to Reality TV and Cultural News Programmes during Holy Month. MTV Arabia, the Middle East’s first youth entertainment and lifestyle channel, today announced it will mark the Holy Month of Ramadan in quiet contemplation, and air only cultural news programmes and reality shows. The channel will refrain from playing music videos during its 24-hour rotation during the holy month of Ramadan. The popular channel launched in November 2007 has brought the Arab world cutting-edge international music as well as the best in Arabic pop and hip hop. In only nine months since launch, the channel has successfully featured the best musical talents, personalities and events in the Middle East. However, MTV Arabia’s Ramadan fare will reflect the solemnity of the Holy Month, according to Samr Al Mazouqi, the channel’s manager.

He said: “The Holy Month is a time for introspection, and we would like to offer our viewers a break from the ordinary fare. Though part of a global brand, MTV Arabia is conscious of regional sensitivities and we are keen to respond to the needs and desires of viewers in the Middle East, the vast majority of whom will be fasting, spending time with family, and focusing on their spiritual lives.”

The channel will continue to play the most popular programmes from MTV’s international roster of reality shows, celebrity news and pop culture documentaries. As is customary with television channels across the region, MTV Arabia will air the call to prayer during Maghreb. The newest programme during the month will be ‘Hogan Knows Best,’ which follows wrestling super star Hulk Hogan in his lesser-known roles as husband and father. Hogan may be a titan in the ring, but his chances for success at home are less than certain as he deals with his wayward teenagers and strong-willed wife.

Another addition to MTV Arabia’s line-up of reality shows is ‘Room 401.’ Taking inspiration from ‘Scare Tactics’ and ‘Punk’D,’ ‘Room 401’ features normal people in spooky situations involving gruesome and creepy special FX. Local programming to be aired during the Holy Month of Ramadan will include the popular ‘Akher Takka,’ which puts unwitting victims into hilariously irritating situations, counting down how much time they can last without blowing their tops!

A free to air channel, MTV Arabia broadcasts from Dubai and is available on the Nilesat and Arabsat platforms.

During the holy month of Ramadan, BASEMENT will showcase the works of 17 international artists. Ramadan, a time of piety, has inspired the BASEMENT gallery to bring the works of 17 international artists to the forefront, showcasing an entire range of creative and unconventional artworks.

The Uncovered exhibition will be held at the Basement gallery in Al Quoz during Ramadan, running from August 25 to September 25. With half of the exhibiting artists under 30, the emphasis is also on promoting young artists.
